Kai Aché
(He/Him, never ‘sir’)
President, Chief Instructor
Kai Aché entered the world of historical martial arts an odd seven or so years ago at the young age of 14 (he jokes that he’s being historically accurate since this is the age a noble boy would enter squirehood) with the goal of becoming a knight. His primary work and practice pertains to the 14th century knight and fencing master Fiore de’i Liberi’s Armizare, the practice and interpretation of which he fuels through his academic training and historiographical knowledge, particularly in regards to Medieval chivalry, which forms of backbone of his academic research.
Kai’s areas of expertise are the Italian Longsword, Dagger, Wrestling, Pollax, and Spear, as well as Armoured Combat, which is his primary focus. However, he also has experience with the German Longsword, Dagger, and Pollax, as well as the Langesmesser, among others.
Beyond HEMA and Armoured Combat, Kai is also interested in horsemanship and equestrian sports, particularly in Armour, as well as Medieval Studies, Tabletop Roleplaying Games, and Historical Fiction. He also holds a French Knighthood, but does not appreciate the address of ‘sir’, and holds Christian Cameron’s Chivalry series as his favourite novels.
He is readily identified by the sound of clanking metal, his calls for a squire, his simultaneous desire for a bout and for a book, and for his inability to stop talking.
Kai is the current President of EUHS, as well as an Instructor of EUHS. For president/admin inquiries or instruction inquiries, feel free to contact him at [email protected].

Gabriel MacCallum
(He/Him)
Treasurer, Web Manager
Just a guy. More details coming soon
Connor Finlay
(He/Him)
Secretary, Assistant Instructor
Connor is the society’s secretary and an Earth Sciences student. We give him paperwork.
Our club was his introduction to HEMA, quickly finding it an engaging way to exercise and learn about the past. Ever eager to get decked, he has particularly enjoyed and focused on the armoured and grappling-centric ends of longsword fencing. Having been horribly hoodwinked by the glint of Pres. Kai’s armour, Connor agreed to be his personal Squire: a role he takes far too seriously. This led to innumerable poor financial decisions, possibly unsafe amounts of WD-40 inhalation and tremendous fun.
When nowhere near a sword, Connor is almost definitely very near a rock: either misidentifying lichen as plagioclase or crawling through it in a cave.
Emily Robson
(She/Her)
Instructor, Squire
Emily has always been fascinated with swords, due in part to her exposure to various reenactment camps from a young age. Her hope is to support the society as an instructor for as long as time allows!
Aside from swinging around swords and polearms, she enjoys music, dance of the ballroom kind, D&D, and historical crafts while snuggling some cats!
Vladimir
(He/Him)
Social Secretary, Squire
Vladimir, Vlad, use whatever is easier. One of the Social Secretaries and an active member of EUHS. He has a past in other martial arts such as BJJ and Muay Thai and is great at chess. A current medical student at University.

Jackdaw A. Gaspar
(He/It/They)
Court Jester (Social Secretary), Squire
Jackdaw A. Gaspar (he/it/they) is a 3rd year Archaeology student, active EUHS member, c̶o̶u̶r̶t̶ ̶j̶e̶s̶t̶e̶r̶ Social Secretary, and the Wellbeing and Inclusion Officer. Aside from sillies, scheming and swinging swords about, other forays include various arts and crafts, music, gallivanting about on tallships and dinghies, as well as miraculously surviving moshpits.
Please feel free to reach out to him via [email protected], or more readily through the EUHS Instagram ! 🙂
Kai Bennett
(They/Them)
Armourer, Squire
Kai is the society’s Armourer and an Archaeology & Ancient History student who joined the society when it first began. While they have limited HEMA experience, they have several years of gremlin experience which assists in many medieval shenanigans. They are also a reenactor within a local 14th century reenactment group and enjoy a multitude of crafts such as leatherwork. Outside of the medieval world, they enjoy various video games (especially Pokémon), playing D&D, and collecting trinkets.
Jacob Taylor
(He/Him)
Assistant Instructor, Squire
As a student of History and War Studies with a focus on armour, Jacob’s entry into HEMA and re-enactment was inevitable. His interests cover a number of weapons and time periods, from poleaxes and longswords to sabres and bayonets, however he is most comfortable fighting from behind a large shield. He is also very interested in armoured fencing, as the history of armour and cavalry is his favourite area of study.
Jacob is the newest assistant instructor in EUHS, and is currently developing a sabre course to complement our existing longsword class. Outside of HEMA his hobbies include rifle shooting, chess, and online gaming. He can usually be found sleeping in a muddy field with no signal, or fighting for his life in Hive.
Serhii Chernykh
(He/Him)
Squire
Serhii is a society squire and a Physics student. Being a local mad scientist and a medieval enthusiast, it was inevitable that he would join a HEMA society at some point. His interests cover single and double-handed swords of medieval and later periods. He deeply regrets that sword evolution didn’t go much further and we don’t have lightsabres yet. Outside of fencing, he is making historically-looking hats and wants to buy himself a full set of armour some day.
